REVIEW OF AERODYNAMIC TERMS - YAW

Yaw is the left/right displacement of the tail of the aircraft (remember the aircraft can move in three directions unlike ground travel).

The pilot uses the rudder to yaw the aircraft left or right. The pilot sometimes uses rudder inputs to keep the aircraft tracking on the runway centerline during crosswind conditions (winds that are not directly down the runway).

Sometimes you may see this in high crosswind conditions when it appears that the aircraft is not flying toward the runway and is turned into the wind a bit (called “crabbing into the wind”).
