ORIGINS AND EARLY MILITARY USES

The War of 1812 marked the first use of rockets in the Americas. A rocket battery was used in1847 against the Mexican forces at the Siege of Veracruz.

The first recorded use of rockets during the Civil War was on July 3, 1862, when Confederate cavalry fired rockets at Union troops in Virginia. Due to their poor accuracy, the American military remained largely unaware of the potential of rockets. However, rockets were employed in fits and starts in many of the brushfire wars punctuating the closing days of the late 1800’s.
