MODERN
ROCKET PROPULSION |
|
Konstantin E. Tsiolkovsky (1857-1935) was
a Russian physicist who published the rocket equation in 1903. This work
laid the theoretical foundations for future rocket design and is still
used today.
In 1929 he put forth the theory of multistage rockets. He also developed
the principles behind reaction vehicles, designed orbital space stations,
and promoted interplanetary travel.
He furthered studies on many principles commonly used in rockets today:
multistage boosters, fuel mixtures such as liquid hydrogen and liquid
oxygen, the problems and possibilities inherent in microgravity, the
promise of solar power, and spacesuits for extravehicular activity. |
