MODERN ROCKET PROPULSION

Sergey P. Korolev (1907-1966), a Soviet aeronautical engineer, directed the 1933 launch of the Soviet Union's first liquid propellant rocket. Sent to Germany after WW II to review V-2 programs, he began designing rockets, guided missiles, and spacecraft.

Korolev headed the Special Design Bureau for the military missile industry, which designed the greatest number of Soviet missiles and rocket boosters.

He was later placed in charge of systems engineering for Soviet spacecraft and, from the mid 1950s, headed the main Soviet space research programs. His "Chief Designer" identity was a closely held state secret until well after his death in 1966.
