MODERN ROCKET PROPULSION

For fifteen years after World War II, von Braun worked with the United States Army in the development of ballistic missiles, including the Army's Redstone and Jupiter missiles.

In 1960, his rocket development center transferred to the newly established NASA where von Braun became director of NASA's Marshall Spaceflight Center and the chief architect of the Saturn V launch vehicle -- the super-booster that would propel Americans to the Moon.

Von Braun became one of the most prominent spokesmen of space exploration in the United States from the 1950s through the 1970s. His unique blend of technical expertise and management skills was extremely important to the space program.
