THE FIRST SATELLITES

In 1956, the Office of Naval Research was working to achieve satellite capability for the United States. One early proposal was a joint venture between the United States Army and the United States Navy, with industry and university assistance. This project came to be called Project Orbiter.

Orbiter was to launch a small satellite using a Juno I, which was a modified Redstone ballistic missile with solid propellant upper stages. However, Project Orbiter was doomed never to orbit because of competition within the Navy itself, and because of national security issues known only to a few.
