REVIEW
OF AERODYNAMIC TERMS - FLAPS |
|
The control surface that lowers from
the back (or trailing edge) of the wing is the flap. Flaps are used
in the takeoff and landing phases of flight to allow the aircraft
to fly safer at slower speeds by actually changing the shape (camber)
of the wing.
When you are flying in a commercial aircraft during its approach to
landing, you often hear the pilot actuating the flap motors to lower
the flaps during the approach. Next time you fly, if you are sitting
near one of the wings, look out the window and watch the flaps come
down in increments during the approach. The pilot puts the flaps down
more and more as the aircraft slows during its approach. |
