ORIGINS
AND EARLY MILITARY USES |
|
The Chinese began to use rockets as military
weapons against the Mongols around 1045. It is certain that by that time,
the use of gunpowder and rockets was an integral aspect of the Chinese
military tactics.
Due to poor guidance capabilities, these early rockets had more psychological
effect than military use. Rocket "fire-arrows" were used to repel Mongol
invaders at the battle of Kai-fung-fi in 1232.
According to reports, when the rocket was lit, it made a noise that resembled
thunder that could be heard for five leagues - about 15 miles. It is
claimed that when it fell to earth, the "fire-arrow" caused damage within
a 2000-foot radius. |
