ORIGINS
AND EARLY MILITARY USES |
|
The rocket appears to have arrived in Eastern
Europe around 1241. Contemporary accounts describe rocket-like weapons
being used by the Mongols against the Magyar forces at the Battle of
Budapest on December 25, 1241.
Rockets first appear in Arabian literature in 1258, describing the Mongol
invaders’ use of them to capture the city of Baghdad. Quick to learn,
the Arabians adopted the rocket into their own arms inventory and used
rockets against the invading French army of King Louis IX in 1268, during
the Seventh Crusade. |
