Who We Are

  The International Aviation Human Factors Conference is a group of researchers, academics, scholars, and peers who work with and study human factors in aviation. This group explores common challenges, presents possible solutions, and engages with a community of peers in the field of aviation.

  This conference is an opportunity for intense learning and networking, Whether you want to present your latest research, learn from fellow academics, or soak in the dynamic vibe of the international community, LAHFC is a must attend event of the year.

Special Guest Speaker and Inventor of the HFACS

Dr. Scott Shappell

  Dr. Shappell is currently a Professor and Chair of the Department of Human Factors and Behavioral Neurobiology at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. Before joining the faculty at ERAU in the fall of 2012, Dr. Shappell was professor of Industrial Engineering at Clemson University from 2005-2012. Before that, he was the Human Factors Research Branch Manager at the Civil Aerospace Medical Institute. In addition, he has served over 16 years in the U.S. Navy as an Aerospace Experimental Psychologist. He has published/presented well over 200 papers, books, and presentations in the fields of accident investigation, system safety, spatial disorientation, sustained operations and fatigue. Dr. Shappell received a B.S. in psychology (1983) from Wright State University graduating Summa Cum Laude with honors in psychology and a Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the University of Texas Medical Branch in 1990.

Dr. Jon Holbrook

  Jon Holbrook is a cognitive scientist in the Crew Systems and Aviation Operations Branch at NASA Langley Research Center. Dr. Holbrook is interested in the cognitive aspects of human performance in complex environments, and the development of safe, high-performing teams and organizations. Dr. Holbrook’s research has included: mental representation of false memories, weather-related decision making by Alaska bush pilots; prospective memory performance by commercial airline pilots; workstation design and decision support for air traffic control tower personnel; and organizational resilience in NASA’s International Space Station program. Dr. Holbrook serves as a Human Factors Discipline Deputy for the NASA Engineering and Safety Center and as the NASA representative on the U.S. Department of Transportation Human Factors Coordinating Committee. He received his Ph.D. in Cognitive Science from Vanderbilt University.

Dr. Robert “Buck” Joslin

  Dr. Robert “Buck” Joslin is an Associate Professor at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. Previously, he served as the FAA’s Chief Scientific and Technical Advisor for Flight Deck Technology. Prior to joining the FAA, he was a Colonel in the U.S. Marine Corps and military test pilot. He is a Fellow with the Royal Aeronautical Society, Associate Fellow with the Society of Experimental Test Pilots, Full Member of the International Society of Air Safety Investigators, and a Full Member of the Human Factors & Ergonomics Society. Dr. Joslin holds FAA ratings and military qualifications in aircraft ranging from large transports and business/military jets, to general aviation airplanes, seaplanes, helicopters, gliders, and powered lift aircraft.

  James Kwasny is a captain at American Airlines, and served as the LOSA/LIT program manager for the Allied Pilots Association (APA). In his role at APA, he helped found the Learning and Improvement Team at American. He also served as the Director of North American Operations for the LOSA Collaborative for ten years, and is the CEO of Verity Aviation, a consulting company. James is a graduate of the US Air Force Academy.

Dr. David Thirtyacre

  Dr. David Thirtyacre is an Assistant Professor at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, and head of the ERAU Worldwide Department of Flight. A graduate of the US Air Force Academy, he retired from the Air Force after 27 years of duty in the fighter community, with over 3500 hours in fighter aircraft, and was a pioneer in the use of uncrewed systems.The last 17 years of his career were spent at Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas, Nevada where he was director of advanced programs at the USAF Warfare Center. David is a current multi- engine commercial pilot, certified flight instructor- instrument, and remote pilot.

Peter Requa

  Peter Requa is the Senior Director of Supply Chain-Technical Operations at Southwest Airlines, where he leads a team of over 120 people, including senior managers, managers and staff, responsible for $1.1 billion in annual spending. The team also plans and distributes $500 million in aircraft inventory into 1.1 million bins throughout Southwest’s network. Previously, he was Director of Supply Chain Management at Southwest. Before joining Southwest, he held leadership positions at United, Reno Air, and Air Tran.

Harley Moulder

  Harley Moulder is the Maintenance Planning Demand Management Manager at Southwest Airlines, where he specializes in data driven approaches using quantitative methods to support decision making processes across departments. Prior to assuming this role, he held numerous positions at Southwest Airlines and Mesaba Airlines, and served as an avionics supervisor in the United States Navy.
