DEFINITIONS |
|
A function is a set of ordered
pairs that assigns to each member of the domain exactly one
member of the range. The members of the domain are called inputs and
the members
of the range are called outputs.
The symbol f(x), read “f of x,” denotes
the number assigned to x by the relation f. If x is the input, f(x) is
the
output.
For example, if f(x) = 2x2 + 5, then f(3) = 2(3)2 + 5 = 18 +
5 = 23. |
