ASPECTS
OF INTERNATIONAL SPACE TREATIES |
|
In 1958, President Eisenhower and the U.S.
Congress established the organization National Aeronautics and Space
Administration (NASA) for peaceful civilian exploration of space. Years
later, President Johnson proposed to the United Nations that the moon
and other celestial bodies be explored only for peaceful purposes.
Soon after the launch of Sputnik, the United Nations formed a standing
committee to regulate space activities and/or draw up principles of behavior.
Hope for an international space agency and a detailed Magna Carta for
Space Law dimmed in the political realm of the UN. Companies and governments
investing in technology for space opposed UN control as well. |
