THE ESA'S ROLE IN SPACE

Another milestone for the ESA occurred in 1986, when the ESA’s Giotto spacecraft, built and launched by European technology, made a visit to Halley’s Comet. It was the first attempt to reach the comet by any space agency.

Other international accomplishments in space technology include the Ariane rockets developed by the ESA. Arianes now command the commercial market in space launches, especially for communications satellites – despite competition from the USA, Russia, China and Japan. It’s a billion-euro industry.
