WHAT IS PROPULSION?

The word propulsion is actually derived from two Latin words: pro meaning before, or forwards, and pellere meaning to drive. Propulsion means to push forward or drive an object forward. For a rocket, a propulsion system must be capable of generating enough force to push its weight skyward.

An understanding of aerodynamic propulsion is required to design an engine that will provide the force required for an object to take off and fly through the air. Aerodynamic propulsion theory is how engineers determine the right kind of engine and the right amount of power that an engine will need to accomplish this flight.
