The People’s Republic of China has obtained achievements in the development of space technology through its self-reliance imposed by its national closed-door policy. The Chinese program began in the 1950s with missile and rocket development through an organization called the No. 5 Research Academy of the Ministry of National Defense. On November 5, 1960, the first Chinese-made short-range surface-to-surface missile made its successful first flight. Since that first missile launch, China is best known for the design and production of Long March launch vehicles. Presently, China operates three widely separated space launch centers to meet the needs of the Long March vehicles. |
