Solving a System of Equations with Three Unknowns
SOLVING A SYSTEM OF EQUATIONS WITH TWO UNKNOWNS
Now that we have solved for x (x = y – 1), substitute the value for x in equation (1).

Substitute (y – 1) for x in equation 1:
  • 2(y – 1) + 3y = 18
  • 2y – 2 + 3y = 18
  • 5y – 2 + 2 = 18 + 2
  • 5y = 20
  • 5y = 20
     5      5
  • y = 4
Substitute (y – 1) for x in equation 1
