THE MERCURY PROGRAM

Following the last flight, NASA had a listing of significant findings from the medical operations of the Mercury program to work with for future missions. These included:
  1. No evidence of significant degradation of pilot function attributable to space flight.
  2. Inflight sleep was possible.
  3. Insignificant radiation doses received by the astronauts.
  4. No evidence of abnormal sensory, psychiatric, or psychological response for the astronauts.
  5. Following missions of 9 and 34 hours duration, a rise in heart rate and fall in blood pressure was troubling.
