THE GEMINI PROGRAM

The ten space flights of the U.S. Gemini Program from 1965 to 1966 gathered necessary engineering data NASA felt it needed before attempting a manned landing on the Moon’s surface.

Originally designated as “Mercury Mark II,” Gemini was pure developmental flight testing. The astronauts selected for the program were referred to as the “Next Nine.” The group included the first civilian test pilots chosen as astronauts: Neil Armstrong from NASA and Elliot See from General Electric.
