THE LUNAR LANDERS

After successfully impacting probes on the lunar surface, both the Soviet Union and the United States began work on programs that would create “soft landers.” A soft lander is a craft designed to “settle” onto the surface, instead of crashing into it, as the early Luna and the Ranger Program flights did.

In 1963, the Russians were ready to continue their Luna program, having just redesigned their spacecraft. It was now ready to deliver a 220 pound instrument package to the lunar surface.
