THE LUNAR LANDERS

Launched on January 31, 1966, Luna 9 was the first successful lunar soft landing. After three and a half days of flight, the craft landed in the Oceanus Procellarum on the lunar surface. Luna 9 transmitted photographs that provided a panoramic view of the lunar surface near the craft. Launched on December 21, 1966, Luna 13 landed in the Oceanus Procellarum and immediately began to send radio transmissions and photographic images.

The remaining Luna flights were divided into lunar orbiters, lunar rovers, or lunar soil sample return crafts. During their time on the moon, the Luna crafts returned more than 200 TV panoramas and 20,000 TV images, conducted more than 500 tests on lunar soil, and traveled 6.32 miles on the lunar surface.
