THE GEMINI PROGRAM

The booster rocket selected for the Gemini flights was a modified Titan II launch vehicle, an ICBM that used different fuels than Project Mercury’s Atlas rocket. There were also some modifications made to the space capsule. Ejection seats were installed and the crew escape tower was omitted.

Gemini’s first flight launched March 23, 1965. Commanding the mission was Mercury veteran, Gus Grissom. His co-pilot, John Young, was making his first flight into space. During this five-hour flight, Grissom became the world’s first space pilot.
