THE GEMINI PROGRAM

After Gemini 10, it became apparent that EVAs were a difficult hurdle for the space program. NASA determined that the training for EVAs, which involved the use of pulleys and wires, as well as rides on the KC-135 aircraft, was not adequately preparing the astronauts.

A plan involving new training in a swimming pool, using neutral buoyancy, was employed. Astronaut Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin was the first to train in the pool.

Soon after the new training, Gemini 12 astronaut Buzz Aldrin performed three flawless EVAs, spending five and a half hours in space, and leading the way for the next era of space flight – lunar exploration.
