THE RACE TO THE MOON

The Ranger Program was an important step towards landing a manned spacecraft on the lunar surface. Its nine missions proved to the politicians, the public, and NASA officials that it was possible to send a craft to the lunar surface and that it was possible to have the craft land on target.

The images returned by the final three Ranger probes allowed for better mapping of the Moon, and provided data for those responsible for seeking a landing site for a manned mission to the Moon.
