THE APOLLO PROGRAM

There were two booster rockets utilized during the Apollo program. The first, the Saturn 1B rocket, was used for Earth-orbiting missions and to test different spacecraft systems in the relative safety of Earth orbit, as opposed to sending untested systems into orbit around the Moon.

The second booster used was the Saturn V. The Saturn V was the rocket that actually flew the astronauts to the Moon. It was used for Apollo flights 8 through 17, although Apollo 9 flew only in the Earth’s orbit.
