THE APOLLO PROGRAM

The first manned flight of the Apollo Program was designated Apollo 7. The crew included Walter M. Schirra, Jr., the Commander; Donn F. Eisele, the CSM Pilot; and R. Walter Cunningham, the LM Pilot. (Although this Saturn 1B flight did not carry a LM).

Apollo 7 launched on October 11, 1968, for a ten day, twenty hour mission. The crew completed 163 orbits of the Earth. This was more time in space than all the Soviet space flights at that time.
