NEWTON'S LAWS & ROCKET PROPULSION

A reaction engine is one where Newton's Third Law is the physical principle governing its type of operation: For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.

A simple form of such a reaction engine is a cannon. When a cannon is fired, the explosion in the chamber propels the cannon ball at high velocity out the open end of the barrel. At the same time, the cannon is pushed back a meter or two.

Whether it's balloons, cannons, or the Space Shuttle, this is action and reaction at work.
