INTRODUCTION

To understand how rockets, such as the Space Shuttle, get into orbit, you must first understand how rocket engines function. Obviously, this requires knowledge of a rocket engine's components and propellants as well as how they affect rocket propulsion.

But even more crucial to achieving this understanding is recognizing when and how each of Newton's Laws of Motion govern the operation of a rocket engine.

Anyone involved in the design, development, test or flight operation of rocket engines must understand and master these concepts.
