THE LUNAR LANDERS

Surveyor 1 launched a few months after the Russian’s Luna 10. Surveyor 1 landed successfully in the Ocean of Storms in June 1966. It transmitted 11,150 detailed television pictures of the lunar terrain surrounding its landing site.

Surveyor 3 launched on April 17, 1967. It returned images of the lunar surface and tested lunar soil samples. Years later, the Apollo 12 mission returned parts of Surveyor 3 left on the Moon to study long-term exposure on equipment.

Surveyor 6 launched November 7, 1967 and landed in the Sinus Medii. It was the first of the Surveyor crafts to successfully use engines to lift-off from the Moon’s surface.
