THE APOLLO PROGRAM

On July 20, 1969, astronaut Neil Armstrong took the first steps on the surface of the Moon. The event was televised and half a billion people around the world held their breaths as history unfolded. Armstrong heralded the moment with one of the most famous quotes ever made, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."

A plaque with the inscription, "Here men from the planet Earth first set foot upon the Moon, July 1969 A.D. We came in peace for all mankind," was left on the surface, next to the impressions of the first American footsteps on the lunar surface. The Apollo 11 mission returned to Earth on July 24, 1969.
