ENERGY - ACTIVE AND PASSIVE DEVICES

As the troubleshooter well knows, all components that might require repair are one of two general types: either passive or active.

Passive devices are those that don’t require an energy source to function and include components such as resistors, capacitors, cables, wires, and filters.

Active devices on the other hand DO require a source of energy and have the ability to electrically control electron flow. Some active devices allow a voltage to control this electron (current) flow while others allow another current to do the job.

Examples of these active devices include controlled power supplies, transistors, amplifiers, and transmitters.
