DEFINITIONS & HISTORY: CLEANROOM ORIGINS

The introduction of dirt and dust during equipment manufacturing could have life and death consequences for those on the front lines. Again and again, small complex mechanisms failed in the field. To compensate, manufacturers were forced to produce approximately one million replacement parts for every 160,000 electronics units in the field.

The reliability statistics of the day on crucial national defense systems were staggering: a 48% failure rate for Sonar; the even more sophisticated Radar had an incredible 84% inoperative rate! Maintenance costs during this era skyrocketed to over 10 times the initial purchase price.
