CONTROL & DESIGN STANDARDS: SURFACE CONTAMINANTS

In addition to airborne particulates, surface cleanliness is another equally important measure of cleanroom success. Frequently, when consulting the CCP, Military Standard (MIL-STD) 1246 is mentioned. This document, dealing with Product Contamination Levels and Contamination Control, is one of the most widely referenced and established standards. Just as cleanliness is defined as the number of airborne contaminants in a cubic foot of air, the MIL-STD 1246 defines surface cleanliness as the maximum amount of allowable contaminants on a given area. Usually, the unit of measure is a square foot, with particles further categorized by size and count.
