PARTICULATE CONTAMINANTS: FILTERS

High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters were originally developed during World War II to prevent radioactive particles from escaping nuclear reactor facility exhausts.

To qualify as a "true" HEPA, they must not allow more than 3 particles out of 10,000 to penetrate the filter. With a particle removal efficiency of 99.97% at the 0.3 micron diameter level (about 300 times smaller than a single strand of hair), they play a vital role in medical, industrial and military cleanrooms.

1 micron equals one millionth of a meter, or one 26,000 of an inch.
