DEFINITIONS & HISTORY: MISSILE AGE

With the advent of the missile age, and the greater emphasis on miniaturization of components, knowledge of the critical effects of airborne contaminants on the manufacturing process radically advanced.

The hard won lessons of the Second World War resulted in the first modern cleanrooms. The patterns of airflow, air filter efficiency, diffusers, exhausts, air temperature, and air movement between work areas were all recognized as key factors in the modern manufacturing facility.
