CONTROL & DESIGN STANDARDS: MONITORING

Even fingerprints fall into the NVR category. They’re actually nothing more than deposits of skin oils after you’ve handled parts or equipment. Other sources include fluxes remaining after soldering operations, and residue from various cutting fluids and lubricants. These residues are measured in milligrams per square foot and can be of serious concern to future system reliability and safety. In particular, the exposure of liquid oxygen (lox) to petroleum-based NVR and particulate contaminants creates the potential for intense fires. In the vacuum of space, NVR will slowly out-gas, causing potential contamination of other surfaces or higher pressure than expected.
